An L.A. jury found the companies negligent for operating a product that harmed kids and teens and failed to warn about those dangers. The jury ordered them to pay $3 million to the 20-year-old plaintiff who testified that social-media use that started before she was a teen had dominated her life for years and had contributed to mental health issues. The jury also said the companies should pay another $3 million in punitive damages. Meta and Google both defended themselves and said they plan to appeal.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the U.S. is negotiating to end the war in Iran, but declined to say with whom it has held talks. All three major indexes advanced. Front-month futures on Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 2.2% to $102.22 a barrel. The most-active contract, for delivery in June, retreated 6.9%, moving below $100 to $97.26. The Iran war remained top of mind for many traders.
Senate Democrats cited President Trump’s clout, and Senate Republicans charged that progressive activists were pulling the strings. The former today pressed for more restrictions on immigration and border-patrol agents as a condition of DHS funding, but didn’t disclose details. It was a counteroffer to yesterday’s GOP proposal to fund all of DHS except the unit that carries out arrests and deportations, but without any new rules on immigration agents. Long airport-security lines have heightened pressure on Congress to reach a deal. DHS funding lapsed Feb. 14.
Indiana officials cited federal pressure for a crackdown after a WSJ investigation that found Piece by Piece Autism Centers received the highest per-patient payments in the U.S. in 2023—about $340,000 on average. From 2019 to 2023, the Hoosier State directly paid the company $58 million for autism-therapy services, billing records show. Piece by Piece founder Meghann Mitchell didn’t respond to requests for comment this week. Last month, she defended the billing practices, saying, “I don’t think Indiana really had any oversight, or not much.”
U.S. households worth $30 million or more, according to a Princeton economics professor’s analysis of Fed data. Within that, about 74,000 are worth $100 million or more. The very wealthy have amassed more wealth, in part because they own the kinds of assets that have risen particularly dramatically.
